My playbook

Based on your answers, here's your path.

We've grouped your steps into four stages. Tackle them roughly in this order — but you can jump around. Tap a step to see exactly what to do.

Your progress2 of 8 steps complete
01

Protect yourself

Safety first — these come before everything else.

What

Ask the family court for an order that stops your ex from threatening, harassing or contacting you.

How

Complete form FL401 and a supporting witness statement (FL401T). You can apply without telling your ex first (a 'without notice' application) if you are at risk.

Timing

Apply as soon as you safely can. A judge can usually decide within a few days.

What tends to go wrong

Write your statement in clear date order. Vague phrases like 'always' or 'often' weaken your case — use specific incidents with dates.

02

Sort out children

Arrangements for any children under 18.

03

Sort out finances

Money, property, pensions and court fees.

04

The divorce itself

The legal steps that end the marriage.
